About SUBIIE

A comeback built for schools.

We started in 2022 as Mili Llama. We've been through Techstars, partnered with Notre Dame, and rebuilt the whole platform from the studs up. Today, we're SUBIIE — on a mission to deliver world-class staffing service, paired with technology, at a price schools can actually afford.

Our story

From Mili Llama to SUBIIE

SUBIIE started in 2022 as Mili Llama, a small team trying to solve a problem we'd seen up close: schools across America were losing instructional days because the systems they used to find substitute teachers belonged to a different decade. Phone trees at 5:47 AM. Paper timesheets. Spreadsheets passed between offices like batons.

Early on, we were lucky enough to be accepted into Techstars, one of the most respected accelerator programs in the world. The experience sharpened the company in ways we still feel — better discipline around customer development, sharper product thinking, and a network of mentors that pushed us to think bigger about what staffing for schools could be.

Soon after, we partnered with the University of Notre Dame, working closely with their education research teams and pilot schools to make sure what we were building actually solved the problem we set out to solve. Some of our most important early lessons came from that partnership — including the realization that software alone wasn't enough.

Schools didn't need another app. They needed a partner who handled the whole staffing operation — and a price they could put in next year's budget.

In 2025, we made the decision to rebrand. Mili Llama became SUBIIE. The new name is the new mission: serving substitute coverage, full-time recruiting, and everything in between, with the touch of a button. We rebuilt the platform with new technology, expanded the service model, and brought in new team members who'd lived the problem from inside schools.

We're on a comeback journey. We've stayed lean, learned fast, and we're back with a clearer mission than ever — to give schools world-class staffing service, powered by technology, at a price that doesn't break their budget.

This is where we are now. Where we go next depends on the schools who decide to come along.

A new chapter

The SUBIIE mission, moving on from Mili Llama.

Mili Llama taught us what was broken. SUBIIE is how we fix it.

The rebrand wasn't cosmetic. It was the natural conclusion of three years of listening — to principals fighting fire drills before first bell, to teachers tired of leaving their classrooms in the hands of a phone tree, and to substitutes who deserved to be treated like the professionals they are.

Our mission now is plain: deliver world-class staffing service, paired with technology, at a price schools can actually afford. That means absorbing the operational weight schools have carried alone — recruiting, vetting, training, payments, compliance — and pairing it with software that makes the whole machine feel effortless from the inside.

We left behind a name. We kept the lessons, the partnerships, and the team. What we're building from here is the version of school staffing we always thought was possible.

Service firstThe platform is part of the product. The people behind it are the rest.
Technology that disappearsSoftware should feel invisible to the people relying on it.
Pricing schools can plan aroundPredictable, transparent, and built for every school size.
What we believe

Three principles. That's the whole company.

We don't have a hundred values painted on a wall. We have three things we actually believe, and we try to make every product, pricing, and hiring decision reflect them.

— 01

Schools first, always.

We exist to serve the people running schools — not the people running edtech. Every product decision passes through that filter. If it doesn't help a principal, a teacher, or a substitute, we don't ship it.

— 02

Subs are professionals.

Substitute teachers are educators, not gig workers. We design SUBIIE to treat them with the dignity, transparency, and pay reliability the profession has earned and rarely received.

— 03

Affordable, on purpose.

Schools shouldn't have to choose between modern technology and a manageable budget. We priced SUBIIE so that the smallest school district in America can use the same platform the biggest one does.

Leadership

Educators, operators, and builders.

A small team where everyone wears multiple hats. We have spent time inside schools, inside startups, and inside the rooms where staffing decisions get made.

How we got here

The story so far.

Four years, two names, one stubborn belief that schools deserve better than a 5:47 AM phone tree.

2022
Founded as Mili Llama
Joshua Rodgers founds the company in 2022 with a simple thesis: substitute teaching is too important to be managed by a phone tree. The first version of the platform covers a handful of pilot schools.
2023
Accepted into Techstars Accelerator
The company is accepted into Techstars, gaining mentorship, capital, and a sharper sense of how to build a real business. The cohort experience changes how we think about product, customers, and scale.
2024
Notre Dame partnership Research
We partner with the University of Notre Dame to pilot the platform with their education research team. The partnership teaches us that software is only half the answer — schools need full-service staffing, not just an app.
2025
Rebrand from Mili Llama to SUBIIE New chapter
Mili Llama becomes SUBIIE — a new name, a rebuilt platform, and a service model that handles every part of school staffing. We bring in new team members and expand into full-time teacher recruiting.
2026
The comeback Now
SUBIIE re-launches with a clear mission and a clearer offering: world-class staffing service, powered by technology, at a price schools can afford. We're lean, fast-moving, and built for what comes next.

A comeback is just a second beginning — with better instincts.
